Long live the Queen

Well, it's official, folks. I am an award winning pie maker. Yes, it's true. You heard it here first...well, most of you, at least. I took first place in an apple pie contest up in Bethel, Maine. Yeah, like my ego needed a boost, right? LOL

So, here's the sitch - my dear big brother lives in Bethel. Every year, they have a thing called Harvest Days. Part of Harvest Days is a clam chowdah contest - all the local restaurants enter their version...including the local Chinese restaurant that enters a hot, asian version. Another part is the apple pie contest. There's a prize for best professional pie. One for best amateur traditional pie and one for best amateur non-traditional pie. It must be obvious to you that if I was going to get a prize outta this, it would be in the non-traditional category. ;)

Apparently, a "traditional" apple pie has 2 crusts. Mine has only a bottom crust. But it has a pecan streusel topping. C'mon! German DNA dictates that streusel is a necessity! And yeah, there's cream in the filling, but yanno, cream IS one of the four major food groups! (The other three are chocolate, butter and salt.) Anyway, I took first place in my division. Won a $50 gift certificate to a store up there. Best part though, was having the bro bragging about me...."This is my baby sister, Barby...she just won the pie contest!" That was really, really cool.
